Amina Mohammed from Wara Community, Kebbi State, was already serving as a Councillor when she joined the KTMDI WVL-Nigeria Project. However, she faced challenges, including limited leadership and mobilization skills, little knowledge of women’s rights, and a community norm that discouraged women from serving more than one tenure as Councillor.

Through the project, Amina received training and mentorship on leadership, advocacy, lobbying, women’s rights, and promoting women’s inclusion in decision-making. She also participated in engagement meetings with government officials, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and political parties to advocate for greater support for women’s leadership.

The training strengthened her confidence and leadership capacity, enabling her to advocate effectively for women’s rights and participation in politics. The skills she gained contributed to her re-election as Councillor without opposition, despite the existing norm against multiple tenures.

Amina has since mobilized women in her community to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), resulting in more than 85 women obtaining their PVCs. She continues to mentor and encourage women to participate in political processes, leadership roles, and decision-making at community level.

Today, Amina is a strong advocate for women’s rights and leadership and aspires to serve in higher leadership positions, including Chairperson or Member of the House of Assembly. Her story demonstrates how strengthening women’s leadership capacity can increase women’s participation in politics and decision-making, contributing to the achievement of WVL-Nigeria’s goal of advancing women’s leadership and participation.

I am now a better woman leader, and I am inspiring other women to emulate my leadership role.
